Trentino Alto Adige is located in northern Italy and borders Austria, the Veneto and the Po Valley. As it’s part of the southern Alps, it is largely mountainous but varies greatly in terms of topography and climate. You may find valleys or hillsides equally blanketed in vineyards. While many international grapes do well – think Pinot Nero, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Bianco – in the area, several local grapes are cultivated as well, such as Lagrein, Schiava and Teroldego. The area under vine is considerably small – only 15,380 hectares – but the quality in the pristine region is excellent.
